BABY SAFE HAVENS

The findings from the coronial inquest held on 28 May 2010 into the death of yet another abandoned and unclaimed baby boy reiterates the high need and importance of Baby Safe Havens.

This baby was abandoned in early 2009; the coronial inquest has just been completed resulting in the funeral only recently taking place on 3 June 2010.

A Baby Safe Haven would allow for mothers to relinquish unwanted newborns, with immunity from prosecution, rather than abandoning the baby with risk of harm or even death, such as this baby boy.

For those of you who have been following the progress of Senator Polley's attempt to legislate Baby Safe Havens, you will know that she recently wrote to all Premiers and Attorneys-General.

The Senator has received a number of responses and although some states already have legislation in place to deal with this issue, others do recognise and support the importance of Baby Safe Havens to help save babies lives.

Senator Polley is continuing to collect signatures for a petition calling for the establishment of Baby Safe Havens in Australia.  These can be printed out and used to collect signatures.

The petitions can be returned to my office at PO Box 1223, Launceston Tasmania 7250.

Please go to the main homepage to download a copy of the petition to either the Tasmanian House of Assembly or to the Australian Senate.
