Need for Baby Safe Havens Can Not Be Ignored

Last night, Senator Helen Polley gave a well-received adjournment speech highlighting the moral imperative to establish Baby Safe Havens across the nation.

Following the recent discovery of another newborn baby’s body in Brisbane recently, Senator Polley reignited the debate for the introduction of legislation that would lead to the establishment of a network of havens, and thereby offer true alternatives to mothers who resort to abandonment of their newborns.

This had been an actual baby girl, with an infinite lifetime of possibilities ahead of her, before her short life came to a dramatic and deeply saddening end.” Senator Polley stated in her speech.

“Ifthis baby had been handed over under the protection of a Baby Safe Haven she could have been given a new lease on life.”

So long as there is a possibility that even one newborn might be saved then we must act with all our capacity and all our sense of duty to turn that possibility into a reality.” Senator Polley concluded.

Senator Polley continues to liaise with State Governments, elected representatives and interested members of the community to coordinate a state-by-state approach to creating consistent legislation that would see safe havens in operation across the country.
