Boost for Tasmanian Local Roads

“I welcome the announcement by the Minister for Infrastructure, the Hon Anthony Albanese MP, that Tasmanian councils are set to receive significant funding to help maintain and upgrade our local roads.” Senator Helen Polley said.

Nationwide, the Rudd Labor Government has committed $1.75 billion to the Roads to Recovery program over the next 5 years, which will goes towards repairs and upgrades that are identified by local communities as being local priorities.

Tasmania will benefit from $57 million in grants. In Bass alone, over $9.3 million has been committed under the Nation Building Program Roads to Recovery Grant:

·         $4,420,766 granted to Launceston City Council

·         $2,709,464 granted to Dorset Council

·         $1,206,687 granted to George Town Council

·         $969,688    granted to Flinders Island Council

"This funding commitment indicates the Government's dedication to ensuring the improved safety, less congested roads and represents a significant investment in Tasmania's road infrastructure." said Senator Polley. "In addition to the $1.9 billion Financial Assistance Grants and $800 million Community Infrastructure Program already announced by the Government, local councils around Tasmania and the nation have been given an unparalleled opportunity to deliver real outcomes for their communities."
