“The history of this great nation and the fabric of our national identity were in large part formed by the 8700 Australian servicemen who were lost on the shores of Gallipoli during that fateful campaign in 1915.” Senator Polley observed. “These courageous men and, in some cases, mere boys, lost their lives in the service of their country, their Commonwealth and the very notion of freedom. Anzac Day is the lasting legacy to their sacrifice.”
Senator Polley has called on all Tasmanians to take a renewed look at the meaning and purpose of Anzac Day in 2009 and to join one of the commemorative services being held across the state. “We are fortunate enough that we and our family will most likely never know the kind of war that the Anzacs did. The simplest and most significant thing we as individuals can do is to join with others at a service, under the lonely sound of the bugle, and remember the Anzacs and their bravery.” the Senator stated. “Many of us may never have been to an Anzac service before. Let this year be the first of many.”
Services are held in most major towns and cities. If unsure, please contact your local RSL to check for a service in your area.
