Launceston to host Centrelink Jobs Expo to
Keep Australia Working

Minister for Human Services, Chris Bowen MP, and Senator Helen Polley, have today announced that Launceston will host a Centrelink Jobs Expo as part of the Keep Australia Working initiative.

The event will be held at Albert Hall in Tamar Street on Wednesday, 14 October 2009.

“Tasmania’s North West and Northern region is one of 20 Priority Employment Areas identified in the Keep Australia Working interim report as being highly vulnerable as a result of the global recession,” Mr Bowen said.

“These are difficult times, and Centrelink has been working extremely hard in communities like Launceston to ensure job seekers get the support they need to get back on their feet.

“The Centrelink Jobs Expo brings to fruition one of the key recommendations of this interim report, and will provide job seekers with a fantastic opportunity to talk to local employers, education and training bodies as well as Government service agencies.”

Senator Polley said the Centrelink Jobs Expo will link local people with local jobs.

“Tasmania has had its share of employment pressures, and finding and keeping a job in the current economic environment has never been more important,” Senator Polley said.

“The Centrelink Jobs Expo will enable job seekers to access a range of employment opportunities under the one roof, including new jobs in the fibre optic and insulation industries.

“Information on training, education and apprenticeships will also be available to those looking to enhance their existing skills or train for a new career.

“A range of activities will be throughout the day, such as financial information seminars to assist Centrelink customers, job seekers and workers at risk of unemployment or reduced income.

“The Expo is open to everyone and entry is free.”

Mr Bowen said it’s not too late for potential exhibitors to get involved.

“The Centrelink Jobs Expo is an excellent opportunity to get in touch directly with local job seekers,” Mr Bowen said.

“It’s free for organisations to take part, so I’d encourage anyone wanting to put their business or organisation on show at the Expo to secure their stall as quickly as possible.”

More information about the Launceston Centrelink Jobs Expo will be available in the coming weeks.

Potential exhibitors should contact Centrelink on 03-6336 9481.
