Senator Polley Opens New Scottsdale Bowls Turf
Senator Helen Polley opened the new synthetic turf at the Scottsdale Bowls Club on Saturday, fulfilling a 2007 election commitment to fund the upgrade to the club's surface.
$187,000 was provided by the Department of Health and Ageing towards the new synthetic grass cover. This was in addition to over $10,500 that was committed by the Club's own members.
"This upgrade is the realisation of 4 years of planning and preparation by the Scottsdale Bowls Club." Senator Polley said. "The Club acts as a focal in the Scottsdale community, as bowls clubs do in many Tasmanian communities. The upgrade to a new synthetic surface will allow the Club to grow in its role as a means of keeping older Tasmanians healthy, active and socially connected."
Senator Polley was honoured to be the one to throw the first jack on the new surface, as well as rolling the first bowl.
Tasmania has 73 bowls clubs state-wide as well as approximately 6500 active registered players. The Scottsdale Bowls Club boasts 100 active members.
