TAMAR VALLEY WINE ROUTE ENHANCES TOURISM EXPERIENCE IN TASMANIA

The Tamar Valley Wine Route to take visitors around the Tamar River in Tasmania’s central north was officially launched in Launceston today by the Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP.

The Gillard Labor Government’s support for the wine industry is in stark contrast to the Coalition’s policies, which will hurt the industry.

This industry will suffer from the flow on effects of Tony Abbott’s Coles and Woolies tax.

“The Gillard Labor Government understands the importance of the wine industry to regional jobs and the regional economy in Bass – and we deplore the impact Tony Abbott’s tax hike would have on the wine industry,” Minister Ferguson said.

Joined by Senator Polley and Federal Labor Candidate for Bass, Geoff Lyons, Minister Ferguson outlined the boost to local tourism the wine route will deliver.

“The tourism opportunities on offer along the Tamar Valley Wine Route will entice more visitors to the region,” Minister Ferguson said.

“Part of our strategy for a strong and sustainable tourism industry in Australia is to encourage visitors to travel beyond the gateways of our capital cities and discover the many tourism experiences our regions have to offer.

“We want visitors to travel further, spend more and stay longer.

“That is why last Friday I announced new funding of $40 million over four years to extend the TQUAL Grants program.

“The local value of TQUAL grants can be seen with projects like the Tamar Valley Wine Route. Our $100,000 grant will have a multiplier effect across the entire region.”

Senator Polley underlined the value of this project to the region’s local tourism operators.

“The wine route connects visitors with many local producers, vineyards, cellar doors and other hospitality operators,” Senator Polley said.

“Tourists will experience some of the best food and wine in the country – not to mention the stunning vistas that we are so renowned for here in Tasmania.”

Candidate for Bass, Geoff Lyons also welcomed Federal Labor’s support for his region.

“There is so much potential to really grow local tourism here in the Tamar Valley,” Mr Lyons said.

“Funding for programs like the wine route give local companies the helping hand they need to unlock this potential - delivering benefits to our local economy and the community as a whole.”
