Titmus Needs to Answer Pulp Mill Question

Senator Polley today called on Liberal candidate for Bass, Steve Titmus, to make clear his stance on the proposed Gunns Pulp Mill for the Tamar Valley. Mr Titmus was announced as the endorsed Liberal candidate for the seat of Bass in the next Federal election but has refused to comment on whether he or his Party support the mill.

“This is one of the most significant job-creation and development projects for Bass that the region has ever seen.” Senator Polley stated. “It is incomprehensible that Mr Titmus can propose to represent the people of Bass but not make it clear whether or not he supports this project.”

Senator Polley has accused Mr Titmus of trying to be deliberately vague in order to side-step something he and the entire Tasmanian Liberals see as being politically difficult.

“On one hand the Liberals want to appear to support Tasmanian jobs and growth. On the other, they want to try and court the green vote. Mr Titmus has gone from being the PR consultant for Gunns to being unwillingly to publicly support the Gunns Pulp Mill. This is fence-sitting at its most obscene.” Senator Polley said. “It does not serve the needs or the interests of the voters of Bass.”
