World No Tobacco Day

Labor Senator Helen Polley today reinforced the celebration of ‘World No Tobacco Day which highlights the health risks associated with tobacco use and praised all who participated.

“’World No Tobacco Day’ is a great way of alerting people to the serious health risks associated with smoking and try to encourage people to give up,” Senator Polley said.

Senator Polley said that “this year the theme is ‘Gender and tobacco, with an emphasis on marketing to women’, which is especially important given that women make up approximately 20% of the world’s more than one billion smokers.

“It is important that people recognise that tobacco advertising is often targeted to specific groups and the World Health Organisation is using ‘World No Tobacco Day’ to draw attention to the negative effects that these marketing campaigns can have,” Senator Polley said.

“I would encourage everyone that smokes, female or male, to seriously consider adopting the important messages of ‘World No Tobacco Day’ and give up smoking,” Senator Polley said.
