Name Derivation: Named after Dr George Bass (1771-1803), an early settler and explorer.

Area and Location Description: Bass covers an area of approximately 7,343 sq km from Launceston in the south to Flinders Island in the north. The City of Launceston and its suburbs, and the towns of Bell Bay, Bridport, George Town, Lilydale, Legana, Ringarooma and Scottsdale, as well as Cape Barren Island, Clarke Island & Flinders Island are in this division.

Products/Industries of the Area: Aluminium and ferrous metal smelting, brewery, cattle (dairy and beef) farming, manufacturing, mining, ports and shipping, ship building, timber, tourism, fishing, wineries and wool.

First Proclaimed/Election: 1903

BRADDON

Braddon

Name Derivation: Named after Sir Edward Braddon 1829-1904, Premier of Tasmania 1894-99, and a Member of the House of Representatives 1901-04.

Area and Location Description: Braddon is a rural electorate covering approximately 11,760 sq km in North West Tasmania. It includes King Island. The cities of Burnie and Devonport are in the Division of Braddon. Other towns include Currie, Latrobe, Penguin, Port Sorell, Smithton, Somerset, Stanley, Ulverstone, Waratah and Wynyard.

Products/Industries of the Area: Forestry, fishing, kelp harvesting, dairying, beef cattle production and vegetable, poppy and pyrethrum growing are major primary industries. Vegetable processing, cheese manufacture and sawmilling complement these activities. An iron ore mine is located at Savage River. Manufacturing industry includes paper mills at Burnie and Wesley Vale, mining equipment at Burnie and weaving mills at Devonport. A number of telecommunications call centres are located in the Division. Burnie and Devonport are major ports, and interstate airports are located at Devonport and Wynyard. A daily passenger ferry service operates between Devonport and Port Melbourne.

First Proclaimed/Election: 1955 (This division was previously Darwin, which was proclaimed in 1903. Its name was changed in 1955.)

DENISON

Name Derivation: Named after Sir William Denison 1804-71, Lieutenant-Governor of Tasmania 1847-55 and Governor of New South Wales 1855-61.

Area and Location Description: Denison covers an area of approximately 221 sq km from Austins Ferry in the north to Taroona in the south, from Hobart in the east to Collinsvale in the west. The City of Hobart and environs and the City of Glenorchy are in this division.

Products/Industries of the Area: Banking and retail, chocolate and confectionery, catamaran construction, brewery, zinc works, food and timber processing, heavy transport, wholesale trade, engineering works, glass products and port facilities at Hobart.

First Proclaimed/Election: 1903

FRANKLIN

Franklin

Name Derivation: Named after Sir John Franklin 1786-1847, Lieutenant-Governor of Tasmania 1837-43.

Area and Location Description: Franklin covers an area of approximately 7 933 sq km from Bridgewater in the north to Port Davey in the south and Seven Mile Beach in the east. The City of Clarence is in the division. Other major towns include Blackmans Bay, Bridgewater, Cygnet, Dover, Franklin, Geeveston, Huonville, Kingston, Margate and Snug as well as Bruny Island.

Products/Industries of the Area: Apples, pears, small fruits, fishing, beef cattle, sheep, forestry, cottage industry and tourism.

First Proclaimed/Election: 1903

LYONS

Name Derivation: Named after Joseph Lyons 1879-1939, and Dame Enid Lyons 1897-1981

Area and Location Description: Lyons, covers an area of approximately 40 604 sq km is the largest division in Tasmania covering most of the State from the west to the east coasts and from Beaconsfield township in the north to New Norfolk and the Tasman Peninsula region in the south. The main towns include Beaconsfield, Brighton, Campbell Town, Deloraine, Dodges Ferry, Evandale, Exeter, Hadspen, Longford, Midway Point, New Norfolk, Perth, Queenstown, Richmond, St Helens, Sheffield, Sorell and Westbury.

Products/Industries of the Area: Fishing, forestry, wool, cattle (dairy and beef), fruit, wine, hydro-power generation, mining and tourism.

First Proclaimed/Election: 1984 (This division was previously Wilmot, which was proclaimed in 1903. Its name was changed in 1984.)

Demographic Rating: Rural
